The main character is a professor at Columbia University named Gregory Larkin, he advertises in a dating newspaper. So he meets the professor of literature at the same university, Rose Morgan, who lives with the domineering mother Hannah. Gregory proposes to Rose to marry him, creating a platonic sexless relationship based on intellectual intimacy, Rose agrees. But over time, a woman begins to feel the need for love, and her husband's unwillingness for herself explains her unattractiveness. She decides to transform. By the arrival of her husband, she lost weight, changed her hair and her entire wardrobe. But Gregory is not happy with the changes of his wife, they break up to realize what feelings between them really are.
